Southerness

Located on the Scottish side of the Solway Firth, Southerness is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It is in my opinion one of the very best links courses in Scotland as is the nearby (as the crow flies) Silloth on the England side of the Firth.

I will not repeat all the information as to the history of any courses that have already been reviewed at length in Journey through the Links and the updated sequel Another Journey through the Links.

Southerness was in absolutely superb condition and was everything a good links should be. When I was last there in 1998 it was so wet and windy I had not realized how many holes provide such a great sea view. I don't think there are any weak holes but I particularly like the stretch of holes from the 8th to the 13th. Two of the most challenging are the long par 4's at 12 and 13. The twelfth dog- legs right to a green right at the water's edge. The temptation is to play into the left side of the green but be warned that if you are a little too far left you will finish in a small pond that is largely hidden from view.

The thirteenth is a 467 yard par 4 that plays along the coastal edge towards the lighthouse. If you try to cut too much off the slight dog-leg then you will encounter some fairly thick rough, especially in late spring/early summer.

There is not much in the way of good accommodation in Southerness but in the nearby seaside village of Carsethorn there are some good B & B's and the local pub which has excellent sea food on the menu.
